# Glossary

The canonical source of the terms is **Chapter 35 — Glossary**. Below, the most
frequently consulted terms and the table of **2026 renames** (essential when reading old material).

## Essential terms
| Term | Short meaning |
|---|---|
| **Component** | the base unit of UI; everything derives from it ([concept](/docs/concepts/everything-is-a-component)) |
| **paint thread** | the single thread where all UI and rendering happen ([concept](/docs/concepts/the-paint-thread)) |
| **render on demand** | the screen only redraws when `repaint()` is called |
| **Relative** | relative dimension (font/screen/container) — the basis of responsiveness |
| **Gap** | spacing; `ingap` = internal padding, `outgap` = external margin |
| **Skin** | the shape/structure factory (Material/iOS/Flutter) |
| **Theme / ColorScheme** | the semantic color roles per light/dark mode |
| **Styles** | the global style fields + `Skin` delegates |
| **UIConstants** | the hub of shared enums/constants/types |
| **Window** | a full-screen `Component` on the navigation stack |
| **Action** | interaction callback (`run(Component)`) |
